Files--Other Useful Info

Ever wonder where Windows stores icons that can be used with programs? Check out the files moricons.dll, pifmgr.dll and shell32.dll

Files with extensions listed in the following table can be deleted when you need to regain some extra hard drive space. Just be careful that you don't need any of the backup files or .chk files for some reason. If you're not certain, play it safe and copy the files to a floppy; hold onto them until you're sure you don't need them.

~$*.doc

.001

.bk!

A backup file

In general, any file with a .bk? extension--where the question mark represents any number from 1 to 9--is more than likely a backup file

.chk

Files created by Scandisk or Norton Utilities

Created when there's a problem with cross-linked files or lost chains on your hard drive. Most of the time these won't be of much--if any--use to you.

.fts

Associated with help files

Files with this extension are recreated by an application on an as-needed basis.

.gid

Associated with help files

Files with this extension are recreated by an application on an as-needed basis.

.log

A log file

Used by install programs to log actions taken; used by programs to record actions when an error occurs. If all programs are installed correctly and no nasty errors have occurred (just before you start deleting files), you probably won't need these files.

.old

.prv

A backup file

A previous version of some file

.tmp

Temporary File

Look in the C:\Windows\Temp directory for these. Don't delete .tmp files dated today.
